Famous for her role as Liberty Van Zandt on Degrassi: The Next Generation, Sarah also enjoys dancing, singing in the shower, globetrotting to exotic destinations, cooking gourmet meals, creative writing and hanging out with her friends. She is a theatre addict and is looking forward to going to university in a couple years. Sarah lives, was born and raised in Toronto, Canada where she is not a fan of the wintry, cold weather.
While most people recognize her as Emma Nelson from Degrassi: The Next Generation, Miriam may also be familiar to many as the "Voice of YTV". Her voice-over credits include episodes of the animated series Jojo's Circus, Ripping Friends, Cyberchase and Pecoca as well as voicing the lead in the animated series Englebert.

I am in hour 11 of the 16-hour plane journey to Hong Kong. My internal clock is going haywire since we are travelling east and thus following the sun. This means it will be daytime for the 16-hour flight, with nine hours left of daylight once we arrive. So far I have eaten a lunch of chicken and rice, a cup of noodle soup, a bag of chips, two chocolate bars and dim sum—and yet I’m still hungry! This long-haul travelling really takes it out of you. I have been listening to the beeps and bops of some kid’s Game Boy for 11 hours and I have an angry urge to throw it out the window! The only soothing part of this cramped journey is the knowledge of adventures that lay ahead, some reality TV I have downloaded onto my laptop for the journey and the soothing sounds of my favourite bands lulling me into a melodic coma.
Four hours 20 minutes, 3,415 kilometres to go.
Speaking of beautiful music, I must tell you about the infamous Olympic Island concert. The day started off bright and early with a trip to Canadian Tire to pick up the best invention since sliced bread: the only way I can describe this cushioned wonder is that it’s two pieces of canvas-covered foam that are attached with nylon straps. You sit in it like a hammock (minus the ropes). They save your back from the strains of outdoor lawn events and I probably could’ve made a profit if I had the foresight to sell them to the hot, cranky and aching teens sitting around me. My dad and I then headed to a grocer and picked up a bag load of fruit to keep us nourished over the nine-hour concert. One of my best friends, Tricia (who has been more like a supportive older sister over the six years I’ve known her), was waiting eagerly at the ferry docks when my dad dropped me off. Tricia and I were so excited. It made the whole thing a thousand times better to be going with someone who was as pumped as I was to see the best concert of the summer.
…And boy did it live up to its name! After being among the first 20 through the gates, Tricia and I strategized about the best location and “home base” setup. We settled on a post right in front of the sound booth. Although it was about 10 metres away from the stage, we knew that the freedom to stand up, move around and not be trampled by the masses was well worth being farther away. It was surreal—everything was going our way! After the clouds had threatened a downpour earlier in the morning, they parted, revealing sunny, blue skies for the entire duration of the concert. Our home base was perfectly situated, we had a good variety of snacks and, best of all, we could stretch out and enjoy the harmonious entertainment. First to perform was a band called Raising the Fawn—yet another birthed creation of Broken Social Scene (whose offspring include members of Stars, Metric, and Feist). After a brief set change, Broken Mascis Scene was up (equation coming up….):
Broken Social Scene + J. Mascis = Broken Mascis Scene
They turned out to be better than the band minus Mascis. Third up was Feist—the beautiful sound I had been waiting to hear. Despite her obvious lack of energy due to a bad case of the flu, she managed to sing her catchy and exquisite melodies effortlessly. I LOVE HER!
Four hours four minutes, 3,198 kilometres to go.
During the whole concert, Tricia and I managed to get a solid tan, stay hydrated and comfortable, which was unbelievably lucky considering the previous weather forecast, the lack of water vendors and the usual pains of sitting watching an outdoor concert.
Four hours two minutes, 3,007 kilometres to go.
Fourth to the stage was Bloc Party. I had never listened to them before but knew they are British and the hot ticket number in the alternative scene right now. THEY WERE AMAZING! …plus they come from the same area of England as my mom (and let me tell you, NO ONE comes from the northeast). It’s funny how often the second billed band ends up being better than the first band. I have never really loved Broken Social Scene (especially after that Juno performance) because they are a little too unorganized, but I give them cred for producing so many fantastic bands. Tricia and I decided that we wouldn’t stay for the whole show because with like 50,000 people trying to get on a ferry that holds 100, we’d be there for QUITE a while. But we left feeling incredibly satisfied! After all, we had just been to the best concert of the summer, and the only way to go from there was up, up, UP!

Hi Sarah,
I've read your blog and I hope you'll enjoyed that concert you attended, and I hope your trip to Hong Kong will be a success. I was in grief because one of my dogs tragically got runned over and killed last night I think. I've still enjoying DEGRASSI.
Yours truly,
Spencer K.

i LOVE a good concert! it's awesome that you were able to turn an outdoor concert into a comfy situation, cuz lord knows they can be hellish. i played one 2wks ago and it was the sweatiest experience of my life! i too am kinda iffy on Broken Social Scene. they have a song on the soundtrack to the movie Wicker Park (GREAT FILM) that's pretty good tho. anyways, hope you had a good Canada Day. how'd you celebrate. i took it easy. (even tho i live in the US i decided to celebrate Canada Day instead of the 4th, cuz it fell on a better day among other things). anyways have fun in Hong Kong!

Hey Sarah.
I loved this blog about the great Toronto island concert. I think there are at least 2 more this summer but I might be wrong. Things like this concert and all the art and culture is what makes me love this city. So glad you enjoyed your day.
You must be in China now and lovin every minute of it. Am I right? Please let us know how that is going.
I love, love Feist also. When I first heard the cd I was a little iffy as her sound is so "unconventional" but after giving it a second listen I was hooked! Her lyrics are just magic. I'm not much of a BSS kinda listener but maybe I will give them a second chance.
Well, looking forward to reading all about your adventures in China so keep us informed, if you can.
Also, you and your friend look beautiful in those pics.
P.S. - Happy Bilated 18th birthday. I hoped it rocked your socks off.

Well, happy belated birthday! You actually share the same birthday as my sister, who just turned nine. She loves the show also and got a kick out of that. I know how annoying game boys can be. My brother plays them non-stop! I'm glad you had fun at the concert. It sounded really great. Have a great time in Japan and take lots of pictures for us unfortunate people who can't go to Tokyo for our birthdays.
