Catching up with Jewel

Jewel can listen to her new album, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland (Atlantic), and know exactly what she was thinking when she wrote each song. “Each song deals with a scrapbook moment of my life,” says the three-time Grammy nominee. It’s those moments, set up in sequence, that make this album her most autobiographical one to date. From the Arctic tundra of her youth, to her first time in Hollywood, her story comes full circle with this new collection of songs. FASHION18’s Jami Moran caught up with the singer to discuss her new album, her singular style, and why she plans to stock up on plenty of spring dresses.

TELLING HER STORY: I tried to make an honest, biographical record. It really is like a book. When I was making my first album I was 20. I was turning 30 when I was making this album and it was like that phase of my life was ending and another beginning. All 13 songs help tell a story and never repeat an emotion.

LEARNING: I learn all the time. All the songs deal with the topic of trying to find the truth—the struggle to find the truth growing up.

HER STYLE: I’m a Gemini and a girl. I’m kind of moody. That’s the best part of being a girl—you can change with your mood.

FASHION OBSESSIONS: There are so many! I’m mostly into belts right now. And handbags. I really like Sam Robert’s purses—they’re westerny.

SPRING MUST-HAVE: I’m a huge fan of dresses—well, my boyfriend is a huge dress fan—so I plan on getting plenty of spring dresses. (Jewel’s boyfriend is hunky professional bull rider Ty Murray.)

ALWAYS ON HAND: Sunscreen. I’m practical.

BEAUTY ESSENTIALS: Mascara and lip gloss. Right now I’m using L’Oréal Paris Double Extend Mascara. I tried eyelash extensions and I loved them. They were awesome but a lot of upkeep. They’re so addictive, you feel like a princess.

READING: It sounds bizarre but I’m really into cookbooks. It clears my brain. Right now I like drink recipes, like fresh limeade.

LOVING WORK: It’s the coolest thing to get paid for something I would do for free. It’s the biggest treat. I’m so lucky. I wish everybody was able to experience that.

HER MOTTO: Write and learn and have a sense of humour. I would say live and learn, but I never learn from living, I learn from writing about it.
