Sky Sweetnam dishes on style, music and childhood memories
Skye Sweetnam is one über-impressive star. At 18 years old the blue-eyed, raven-haired stunner has written and recorded two albums (the second drops later this year), is the singing voice behind Barbie in the new animated movie The Barbie Diaries, leads a jetset life and has a truly unique, funkadelic personal style. Oh, and did we mention she’s only 18?!
“Every year, life just keeps getting better and better,” Skye admits. From the look of things, she is definitely destined for the top of the pops! FASHION18’s Sara Duck recently scored some chat time with Skye to learn what makes this cool chick tick.
Favourite school memory? It would have to be my first school play when I was in Grade 2. I had the starring role in the Paper Bag Princess and it was the first time I realized I loved to perform in front of an audience.
Coolest thing you’ve done so far? Releasing my record and having the record release party.
Bands you’re listening to? MIA, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Rancid.
Whose style do you love? Deborah Harry in her Blondie days, Gwen Stefani, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Emily Haines from Metric.
Fall fashion must-have? Cool coloured tights with leg warmers, for a layered look.
Favourite city? I love Tokyo. It has been so inspiring to me as a person and as a musical artist.
Describe your style? I love to be girlie with big dresses and jewellery but I also like to mix it up with some punk attitude.
Fashion label you adore? Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? It would definitely still have to be something creative, designing clothes, making films or creating comic books.
