The Real Thing
Meet real-life Instant Star rock grrl Alexz Johnson.
Alexz Johnson is gorgeous, talented and down-to-earth. This 19-year-old songbird and actor from New Westminster, British Columbia, has the world at her fingertips. With two seasons of the hit TV series Instant Star and two albums that correspond with the show under her belt, Alexz is rocketing to superstardom. Alexz and her Instant Star character Jude Harrison seem to have a lot in common: with the third season of Instant Star currently underway and a solo album due out next year, Alexz is trying desperately to maintain a semblance of normal life. FASHION18 had a chance to chat with Alexz to get the dish about her life, her music and her natural hair colour.
FASHION18: How did you get started in singing and acting?
Alexz Johnson: I started auditioning for acting roles in order to earn money to buy equipment for my first love—music—and I ended up loving both! I have been singing since a very young age. I was always known as the little girl with the big voice. When I was 11, I won the anthem-singing contest and sang at sporting events and in other venues.
F18: What inspires you?
A.J.: I’m inspired by everything. It’s really just everyday life experiences, like relationships and family.
F18: Do you think your life is similar to Jude’s?
A.J.: Jude is where I was in life about three years ago.
F18: Given that you’ve already experienced what Jude is going through, what advice would you give her?
A.J.: I would tell her not to take herself too seriously. I would say it’s important to remember that to get what you want in this industry you have to give a little. Most importantly, I would remind her to feel lucky everyday for the great team she has with her.
F18: What is your solo album going to be like?
A.J.: It’s going to be very different from the sound on Instant Star. I write all the songs with my brother and it’s creative pop. It’s going to be my spin on the Kate Bush and Annie Lenox sound.
F18: You have changed your hair colour for Season 2 of Instant Star. Is being a blond really more fun?
A.J.: I am a natural blond, so it is no real shock. To me, it just feels normal.
F18: Celebrity crush?
A.J.: Adrian Brody.
F18: Fave karaoke song?
A.J.: “Under Pressure.”
