The Scissor Sisters pick up exactly where they left off - on the dance floor!
New York glam rockers the Scissor Sisters return with their sophomore release Ta-Dah (Universal/Polydor), which picks up exactly where they left off with their 2004 smash album—on the dance floor!
This four-man, one-woman band know how to shake their groove things, and yours too—there’s no way you can listen to a Sisters album and not feel like dancing! Their disco-chic sounds and funktastic style make for a package that’s made in glam heaven. FASHION18 editor-in-chief Alison McGill recently chatted with the band’s drummer Paddy Boom (via London where he was promoting the new disc) to get the scoop on what’s new in the Scissorhood.
FASHION18: Your debut album was a huge success (it was the biggest selling album in the U.K. in 2004). How much pressure was there to follow it up with another hit?
Paddy Boom: (laughs) A lot, obviously! Our first album sold three million copies in the U.K. alone—it was amazing. I think Ta-Dah is a great followup though because you can hear a lot of the same elements on it as our first, but it’s also very different.
F18: How so?
P.B.: This record for us represents a change in musicianship. The subjects tackled on the album are slightly different and it is a little more melancholy than our first one. We were very snotty and brash on that disc; here we’re a little more thoughtful.
F18: It’s still very groovy though!
P.B.: Oh yeah, we’re still jumpin’! The first single “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’” is a perfect example of what I’m talking about with this new mood. The title and lyrics totally don’t match the tune—it’s a total dance track.
F18: What’s your favourite song?
P.B.: It’s hard to pick just one, but I do love “Transistor,” which is the bonus track on the import version.
F18: I love the song “Paul McCartney.” What’s the story behind that one?
P.B.: It’s Jake’s (Jake Shears, the Sisters’ lead singer and co-songwriter) homage to his musical idol.
F18: Describe your fans.
P.B.: They range in age from three to 85. They are a beautiful array of music lovers and they are the best audience in the world!
F18: What kind of music are you listening to right now?
P.B.: I’m into all kinds of stuff, but current favourites include Gnarls Barkley, Ray Charles, the Cure and LCD Soundsystem.
F18: Let’s talk fashion…you guys are known for your eclectic style.
P.B.: Everyone in the band is an individual and has his or her own look. I would say everyone’s esthetic matches his or her personality. Though we do work with a great stylist from New York, we are very involved in our style. In the end, we dress ourselves because we have to be comfortable and feel comfortable in what we put on.
F18: Are you a labels guy?
P.B.: Absolutely not! I appreciate great design but ultimately I think what makes a person truly fashionable is how they put themselves together and how they wear their clothes.
